The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine 2020

This year’s Nobel Prize is awarded to three scientists who have made a decisive contribution to the fight against blood-borne hepatitis, a major global health problem that causes cirrhosis and liver cancer in people around the world.

Harvey J. Alter, Michael Houghton and Charles M. Rice made seminal discoveries that led to the identification of a novel virus, Hepatitis C virus. Prior to their work, the discovery of the Hepatitis A and B viruses had been critical steps forward, but the majority of blood-borne hepatitis cases remained unexplained. The discovery of Hepatitis C virus revealed the cause of the remaining cases of chronic hepatitis and made possible blood tests and new medicines that have saved millions of lives.

Entropy | Special Issue : Complexity and Evolution

The understanding of evolutionary processes is one the most important issues of scientific enquiry of this century. Scientific thinking in twentieth century witnessed the overwhelming power of the evolutionary paradigm. It not only solidified the foundations of diverse areas such as cell biology, ecology, and economics, but also fostered the development of several mathematical and computational tools to model and simulate how evolutionary processes take place.

Besides the application of the evolutionary paradigm and the discovery of the evolutionary features for diverse processes, there is another interesting aspect which touches upon the emergence of novel evolutionary processes. Generally, the emergence of an evolutionary process requires a complex transition between a prior form where no evolutionary process is undergoing and a posterior form where the evolutionary process has been triggered. Most advanced methods to understand the emergence of evolutionary processes require the consideration of systemic features such as self-organization, resilience, and contextuality, among others.

Full professor in Theoretical Computer Science at the informatics institute @UvA

Do you have the ambition to develop world class research in Theoretical Computer Science at the Informatics Institute, and together with the other new chair Theoretical Computer Science at the Institute for Logic, Language, and Computation form a strong and visible nucleus Theoretical Computer Science in our University? Are you willing to collaborate with other research groups, also within other faculties of the University, to seek relations with public or private partners, to be visible in the broader academic community, to teach theoretical computer Science in our bachelor/master programs and to take responsibility for all theory of computer science aspects of our educational programs?

We offer a position of full professor in Theoretical Computer Science in the Informatics Institute of the University of Amsterdam. This new chair is embedded in the Informatics Institute of the University of Amsterdam and will lead the Theory of Computer Science group. The chair holder should develop a unique profile within the Informatics Institute while interacting with one of more research groups within the Institute. The Institute for Logic, Language, and Computation of the University of Amsterdam will also establish a new chair in Theoretical Computer science, and both chair holders should build links and create a visible nucleus of Theoretical Computer science in Amsterdam, also together with VU and CWI.

Epidemics Dynamics & Control on Networks. Call for papers

Networks are ubiquitous in natural, technological and social systems. They offer a fertile framework for understanding and controlling the diffusion of ideas, rumors, and infectious diseases of plants, animals, and humans. Despite recent advances, many challenging scientific questions remain about the correct tools and their practical role in epidemics dynamics and effective strategies supporting public health decision making. The goal of this special issue is to offer a platform to the interdisciplinary community of scientists working on the diffusion process on networks and its plethora of applications. We hope for a broad range of topics to be covered, across theory, methodology, and application to empirical data with a special emphasis on epidemic spreading.
