talks.cam : Making connections- brains and other complex systems

We’re delighted to announce the start of a new, online seminar series ‘Making connections- brains and other complex systems’, which is not specifically a CNN activity but we believe will be of interest to many on this list.

The series will cover brain networks and other complex systems, and aims to bring together researchers from a range of fields, including systems neuroscience, psychiatry, genomics, computer science, machine learning and physics.

We are starting off with a fantastic line up of speakers particularly focused on the brain- see the schedule below. Talks will be held at 3pm online on alternate Tuesdays, and titles/abstracts and a link to the meeting will be circulated nearer the time.

Tues 17th November 2020- Dr Conor Liston
Tues 1st December 2020- Prof Dani Bassett
Tues 15th December 2020- Dr Aaron Alexander-Bloch
Tues 12th January 2021- Prof Olaf Sporns

Networks 2021

Networks 2021: A Joint Sunbelt and NetSci Conference will take place in Washington D.C. on July 6-11, 2021. We expect this to be the largest networks conference ever held. It will combine the annual meeting of the International Network for Social Network Analysis (Sunbelt XLI), and the annual meeting of the Network Science Society (NetSci 2021).

CCS 2020 Warm-Up

Coinciding with the Conference on Complex Systems, and profiting from the opportunity offered by the presence of a wide variety of experts in different topics, we are organising one-day school for PhD students and early-stage researchers. The school is an informal one-day event that offers early-stage scientists the opportunity to learn about the scientific and life experience of young and senior researchers, try their skills in a data visualisation and have fun playing the specifically tailored online trivia.

This year, due to a worldwide pandemic situation, the school is going to be to be held online on December 4, 2020, before the main CCS conference. The school consists of two non-scientific lectures from young scientists, ask me anything session with a prominent senior researcher, data visualisation contest and an online pub quiz. The sessions will be divided by informal coffee breaks, where participants may chatter with their peers, as in a “normal” face-to-face meeting.

Complexity Weekend. October 16-18, 2020

Meet new collaborators and learn Complexity Science by doing

Complexity Science is an interdisciplinary and inclusive framework for studying, designing, and controlling Complex system behavior, such as global pandemics, extreme weather events, electoral politics, economic recovery and poverty, and much more. Over the course of one weekend, you will experience Complexity from a variety of perspectives, while developing solutions to real-world problems in a team setting, such as:

  • Information flow in a time of global connectivity
  • Adaptive planning for communities amidst turbulence and uncertainty
  • Addressing climate change and extreme weather events
  • Ensuring fair and accurate elections
  • Evaluating shelter-in-place policy efficacy during a pandemic
  • Building resiliency into businesses, governments, and families
  • Healthcare policy and efficacy
  • Mental health and wellness
  • Any other difficult and ongoing problems you can identify
